Enabling the Apple Health integration
If your organization uses the Apple Health integration for Smartabase, you can choose to automatically sync your Apple Health data to Smartabase. When you log into the Athlete app, follow the prompts to set up Connected apps and select Apple Health. If you're already logged into the Athlete app, go to the app Settings and look for Connected apps. If available, select Connected apps then choose Apple Health and follow the prompts to set up data sharing.
To get started, follow these steps:
- Log into the Athlete app using an iOS device. Ensure that you tick the option to Remember site and username and set a PIN as this is necessary for data to sync to your Smartabase account.
- Follow the prompt to set up Connected apps and enable Apple Health. If the prompt doesn’t appear during the log in process or you skip it, you can navigate to the app Settings > Connected apps > Apple Health and follow the instructions on the screen to complete the set up.
- When directed to the Health app, make sure to enable all Health categories.
- After setting up Apple Health, wait for the initial sync to be completed before closing the app or locking your phone.
Syncing your data
The Athlete app will automatically sync data from Apple Health in the background when all of the below is true:
- Your Smartabase account has access to the event forms used to save your data.
- The Athlete app has access to your Apple Health data and all Health categories are enabled.
- Background app refresh is enabled in your iPhone settings.
- Remember site and username and PIN are enabled in the Athlete app.
- Your phone is unlocked. Note that Apple Health data becomes inaccessible when your device is locked.
If automatic syncing does not work for any reason, the Athlete app will send you a reminder to open the app and sync your data. You can turn this off or change the time of the reminder by selecting Reminders and setting a new time. The Athlete app will also detect any syncing issues with Apple Health and guide you to resolve them through warning icons in the app’s settings.
If you run into any issues with syncing your data, please follow our Apple Health troubleshooting steps below.
Manually sync your data
To send your data to Smartabase manually, please follow these steps:
- Open the Athlete app on your iPhone.
- Navigate to Settings.
- Select Connected apps from the menu.
- Select Apple Health.
- Click Sync now to initiate a manual sync.
- Wait for the sync process to complete before closing the app or locking your phone.
Stop Apple Health data from being synced

Sync reminders
In the Apple Health Settings, you can enable daily reminders to sync Apple Health data to the Athlete app. Choose what time you would like to receive the daily reminder by tapping on the time under Reminders. The reminder will be sent as a push notification. Tapping the notification will open the Apple Health syncing screening on the Athlete app.
Troubleshooting
If the Apple Health integration is not working as expected, please check the following troubleshooting steps:
- Ensure you have access to the right Smartabase forms.
- Confirm that the Athlete app has access to your Apple Health data.
- Check that Background app refresh is enabled in your iPhone settings.
- Ensure that you enable Remember site and username and set up a PIN when logging into the Athlete app.
- Re-install the Athlete app and re-enable the integration.
1. Ensure you have access to the right Smartabase forms
For data to be synced from Apple Health to the Athlete app, you will need access to specific forms in Smartabase where the data can be saved. Your organization will determine which data should be synced from Apple Health, and therefore which forms you need to have access to.
To find out if you have access to the forms, go to the Settings in the Athlete app and look for Connected apps. If you can see that option, select it and then look for Apple Health. If you cannot see either of those options, you do not have access to the forms.
If you have any doubt, please contact your coach or Smartabase administrator and ask them to check that you have access to the forms that are used for Apple Health.
2. Confirm that the Athlete app has access to your Apple Health data
In order to sync your data, the Athlete app needs to have a permission to sync data from the Apple Health app.
- Open the Health app on your iPhone.
- Click on the user profile icon in the top-right corner of your screen.
- Under the privacy section, select Apps.
- Select Athlete app.
- Scroll through the list of Health categories and make sure that all options are toggled on.
For more information, refer to Apple’s iPhone user guide article Share health and fitness data in Health on iPhone.
3. Check that Background app refresh is enabled in your iPhone settings
After navigating away from the Athlete app, the app can run for a short period of time before it is set to a suspended state. Apps that are in a suspended state aren’t actively in use, open, or taking up system resources. When Background app refresh is enabled on your device, suspended apps can check for updates and new content.
To check that Background app refresh is enabled, follow these steps:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Select General.
- Click on Background app refresh.
- Make sure that Background app refresh is set to on, then check that the Athlete app option is also toggled on. Note, if your iPhone is in low power mode, Background app refresh is disabled.
For more information, refer to official documentation from Apple: Switch apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
4. Ensure that you enable Remember site and username and set up a PIN when logging into the Athlete app
For security reasons, you must be logged into the Athlete app to sync your data.
- Open the Athlete app on your iPhone.
- If you are currently logged in, navigate to the Settings and Log out.
- On the login screen, make sure that the Remember site and username option is selected.
- Enter your password, click Log in and when prompted, select the Set up PIN option.
5. Re-install the Athlete app and re-enable the integration
If you have gone through steps 1-4 and are still having issues with Apple Health syncing to the Athlete app, reset the app by following these instructions:
- Click and hold the Athlete app icon and select Delete app to remove it from your device.
- Open the App store on your iPhone, search for “Smartabase Athlete” and re-install the Smartabase Athlete app.
- Open the Athlete app, log in with your credentials and select the Remember site and username option.
- Enable a PIN when prompted.
- The Athlete app will detect that you are using an iOS device and that you have access to Apple Health forms in Smartabase, and will prompt you to set up Apple Health after logging in. If you refuse, you can navigate to the Settings on the Athlete app, select Apple Health and follow the instructions on the screen to complete the set up. After setting up Apple Health, wait for the initial sync to be completed before closing the app or locking your phone.
